Communion Guide

We’re so excited to come alongside you as your child grows in their faith! If your child has recently said “yes” to Jesus, that’s a huge and meaningful step—and now they may be wondering what comes next.

One important next step is learning about communion. It’s a special way to remember what Jesus has done and to keep growing in their relationship with Him.

This guide is here to help you talk with your child about what communion is, why it matters, and how you can experience it together as a family.
What Is Communion?
Communion is a way for followers of Jesus to remember what He did on the cross.

At Grace City, we believe communion is for anyone who has decided to follow Jesus. It helps us pause, reflect, and celebrate the life He gives us.

When we take communion, we are:
  • Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice—His body and His blood given for us.
  • Thanking Him for His forgiveness and love.
  • Saying that we believe Jesus died, rose again, and is coming back!
Common Misunderstandings
❌ Communion doesn’t save us.
Only Jesus can save us when we trust in Him (Ephesians 2:8-9).

❌ Communion isn’t just a habit.
It’s a meaningful way to honor Jesus and His love.

❌ Communion isn’t for show.
It’s personal—between your child, Jesus, and your family.
Why Do We Take Communion?
We take communion because Jesus commanded His followers to do it. During the Last Supper, Jesus shared bread and wine with His disciples and said, “Do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19). From that moment on, communion became a sacred practice for believers to regularly remember His sacrifice.

Communion is a way to:
  • Remember what Jesus did for us—His body broken and His blood poured out on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.
  • Reflect on His love, mercy, and grace, and respond with a thankful heart.
  • Refocus our lives on following Him, living in a way that honors His sacrifice.
It’s not just a tradition—it’s a powerful reminder of the gospel and a moment to realign our hearts with Jesus.
Is My Child Ready For Communion?
We encourage kids to take communion only after they’ve chosen to follow Jesus and understand what communion means.

If your child has accepted Jesus and knows what communion is about, they’re ready!

Before taking communion, talk with your child about checking their heart (1 Corinthians 11:27-29). Help them think about forgiveness—making sure they aren’t holding onto hurt or anger—and that they’re ready to honor Jesus.
How To Take Communion as a Family
Communion is a sacred way to remember what Jesus has done for us. As a family, you can create a meaningful moment to pause, reflect, and respond to His love together. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

Step 1: PRAY Together
  • Begin by inviting God into the moment. You can use this prayer or make it your own: “Jesus, thank You for loving us and giving Your life for us on the cross. Thank You for making a way for us to be forgiven and free. Help us to always remember what You’ve done. Today, we take this time to honor You and thank You. Be with us in this moment as we remember Your sacrifice. We love You. Amen.”

Step 2: READ Scripture Together
  • Read Luke 22:14–20 as a family. This passage tells the story of the Last Supper—when Jesus first shared communion with His disciples and said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Step 3: TAKE the Bread
  • Hold the bread or cracker and say: "This bread reminds us of Jesus’ body. His body was broken when He died on the cross for our sins. As we eat this bread, we remember His love and the sacrifice He made for us."
  • Eat the bread together.

Step 4: TAKE the Juice
  • Hold the juice and say: "This juice reminds us of Jesus’ blood. He gave His life so we could be forgiven and have a relationship with God. As we drink, we remember that His blood makes us clean and gives us new life in Him."
  • Drink the juice together.

Step 5: CLOSE in Prayer
  • Finish with a simple prayer of gratitude: “Jesus, thank You for Your love and for giving Your life for us. Thank You for forgiving our sins and drawing us close to You. Help us remember Your sacrifice and live in a way that honors You. We love You. Amen.”

Communion is a powerful way to teach your child what it means to love and follow Jesus. You don’t have to have all the right words—just be real, be honest, and focus on remembering what Jesus has done.

If you’re ever unsure, our Grace City Kids team is here to walk with you—we love partnering with parents to help raise a generation that knows and loves Jesus.
