Parent Guide | Child Dedication
Celebrating God’s Gift and Committing to Raise Your Child to Know Jesus
________________________________________________
What is Child Dedication?
At Grace City Church, we believe children are a gift from God—and as parents, we have the incredible privilege and responsibility to raise them to know and love Jesus.
Child Dedication is a public commitment you make before God, your family, and our church community. It’s a way of saying:
"God, we recognize this child is a gift from You, and we commit to raising them in a way that points them to You."
In dedicating your child, you are:
✅ Thanking God for the gift of your child.
✅ Committing to raise them in the ways of Jesus.
✅ Asking God for wisdom, grace, and strength to be godly parents.
✅ Inviting your church family to pray for and support you in this journey.
________________________________________________
What Child Dedication Is NOT
❌ Child Dedication is not salvation for your child.
We believe that each person makes their own decision to follow Jesus when they are old enough to understand what that means (Romans 10:9-10).
❌ It’s not baptism for your child.
At Grace City, we believe that baptism is a personal decision to follow Jesus and happens when someone is old enough to choose to follow Him (see our Baptism Guide for more on this).
________________________________________________
Why Do We Dedicate Children?
“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” — Psalm 127:3 (NLT)
“People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’” — Mark 10:13-14 (NIV)
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)
________________________________________________
What You’re Committing to as a Parent
When you dedicate your child at Grace City, you are committing to:
We can’t lead our kids to Jesus if we’re not following Him ourselves.
Showing your child what it looks like to love Jesus in everyday life—at home, in marriage, in how you speak, act, and serve.
Sharing God’s Word, praying together, and talking about how to live for Jesus.
We believe that following Jesus is not meant to be done alone. Grace City wants to partner with you as you raise your child to know God’s love.

Parent Guide | Salvation
Helping Your Child Say "Yes" to Jesus
Introduction
At Grace City, we believe one encounter with God changes everything—and that includes our kids!
As a parent, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing your child begin a relationship with Jesus. But sometimes it’s hard to know how to explain salvation in a way they can understand. This guide is here to help you lead that life-changing conversation.
What is Salvation? (Kid-Friendly Version)
Salvation means becoming part of God’s family. It’s when we say "yes" to following Jesus—believing that He died for our sins, came back to life, and that He loves us no matter what.
When we say "yes" to Jesus, He forgives all our sins, gives us a new heart, and promises to always be with us.
When Is My Child Ready?
Look for these signs that your child may be ready to start following Jesus:
✅ They are asking questions about God, heaven, or sin.
✅ They express love for Jesus or talk about Him often.
✅ They understand right and wrong and want to do what’s right.
✅ They say things like, "I want to follow Jesus" or "I want Jesus to be my friend."
If they are showing curiosity or asking questions — you don’t need to have all the answers. This is a perfect moment to start the conversation!
________________________________________________
How to Talk About Salvation with Your Child
Here’s a simple way to explain the Good News:
1. God loves you and made you for a purpose.
"God made us, and He loves us so much! He wants to be your best friend."
➡ (John 3:16)
2. But we’ve all done wrong things called sin.
"Sin is when we choose our way instead of God’s way. It keeps us away from God. But God didn’t want us to stay apart from Him."
➡ (Romans 3:23)
3. Jesus came to fix our friendship with God.
"Jesus came to earth, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and came back to life. He did this so we could be close to God forever."
➡ (Romans 5:8)
4. When we say "yes" to Jesus, He forgives us and gives us a new life!
"If you believe in Jesus and ask Him to forgive you, He will! You’ll be part of God’s family forever."
➡ (Romans 10:9)
________________________________________________
What Can You Say Together? (Sample Prayer)
Here’s a simple prayer you can pray with your child if they’re ready to follow Jesus:
"Jesus, I believe You are God’s Son. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and came back to life. I’m sorry for my sins. Please forgive me. I want You to be my forever friend. Help me follow You. Thank You for loving me. Amen."
👉 Make sure your child uses their own words if they want to! God cares more about their heart than perfect words.

What Happens Next?
Here are important next steps to help your child grow in their new relationship with Jesus:
- Celebrate! 🎉
➡ This is the biggest decision they’ll ever make—make it a big deal! - Talk about Baptism.
➡ Baptism is the next step after salvation to show the world they’re following Jesus. (See our Kids Baptism Guide for more!) - Start praying together.
➡ Teach them that prayer is simply talking to God—anytime, about anything. - Read the Bible together.
➡ Grab a kid-friendly Bible and start reading stories of Jesus together. A great place to start is the book of John or the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). - Stay connected to church.
➡ Grace City Kids is designed to help your child grow, build friendships, and learn to follow Jesus in fun and age-appropriate ways.
You don’t have to do this alone! If you’re unsure if your child is ready or you want help having this conversation, our Grace City Kids team is here for you.
➡ Stop by the Information Center on Sundays or reach out anytime—we would love to walk with you and your family in this journey.
Parent Guide | Baptism
If your child has decided to follow Jesus, we want to help you determine if they’re ready to take their next step—baptism!
This guide is designed to help you have meaningful conversations with your child about what it means to follow Jesus and why baptism is such a big deal.
________________________________________________
Start with the Basics
Has your child asked Jesus into their heart?
Saying "yes" to Jesus is the first step before baptism. Baptism is an outward sign of an inward decision to follow Him.
________________________________________________
Questions to Talk Through Together:
1. When did you decide to follow Jesus and become His forever friend?
➡ Look for a specific moment when they understood who Jesus is and chose to follow Him. It might have happened at church, at home, or even by themselves.
2. What is water baptism?
➡ Baptism is how I show everyone I’m following Jesus! It’s a picture of what Jesus has done in my heart—washing away sin and giving me a new life.
3. Why do you want to get baptized?
➡ Because Jesus was baptized and He asks us to be, too! Because I want to follow Jesus and let everyone know I belong to Him.
4. Why do we need to follow Jesus before getting baptized?
➡ Because baptism is for people who have decided to make Jesus the leader of their life. It shows we’ve already chosen to follow Him.
5. Why do people who follow Jesus get baptized?
➡ Jesus was baptized (Matthew 3:16-17), and He tells us to do the same (Matthew 28:18-20). Baptism shows everyone that we follow Jesus and believe in Him.
6. Why do we go under the water when we get baptized?
➡ Going under the water shows that Jesus died for our sins, and coming up shows that He came back to life! It’s a way to say, “My old life is gone, and I’m starting a new life with Jesus” (Romans 6:3-5).
But What If…?
"If baptism means my old life is gone, why do people still mess up and sin after they're baptized?"
➡ Even though we follow Jesus, we’re still learning. We won’t be perfect, but God helps us grow. We can always ask Him to forgive us (Romans 6:1-2; 7:21-23).
"If I sin again, do I need to get baptized again?"
➡ Nope! Baptism is a one-time decision that shows you belong to Jesus. When you sin, you can talk to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you. He always will (1 John 1:9).

Tips for Parents:

Parent Guide | Communion
Helping You Lead Your Child in Remembering Jesus Together
________________________________________________
A Resource Just for You
First of all—we celebrate with you as your child grows in their faith! If your child has said "yes" to Jesus, this is such an exciting step, and we are here to help you walk alongside them as they learn to follow Him.
As your child grows, they may start asking questions like, "What do I do next?" Communion is a beautiful way to remember what Jesus has done and take a step of obedience in their faith journey.
This guide is designed to help you have meaningful conversations about what communion is, why we do it, and how to share this moment together as a family.
________________________________________________
What Is Communion?
Communion is a special act of remembrance that Jesus gave His followers to help us never forget what He did on the cross.
At Grace City, we believe communion is for anyone who has made the decision to follow Jesus—it’s a way for believers to reflect on His sacrifice and celebrate the life He gives us.
When we take communion, we are:
✅ Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice—His body and His blood given for us.
✅ Thanking Him for His forgiveness and love.
✅ Proclaiming our faith—that Jesus died, rose again, and is coming back!
________________________________________________
What Communion Is NOT
❌ Communion is not what saves us.
➡ Only Jesus saves us when we put our trust in Him (Ephesians 2:8-9).
❌ Communion is not just a ritual.
➡ It’s a real, meaningful way to honor Jesus and reflect on His love.
❌ Communion is not for show.
➡ It’s a personal and spiritual act between your child, Jesus, and your family.
________________________________________________
Why Do We Celebrate Communion?
Because Jesus asked us to. In Luke 22:14-20, before Jesus went to the cross, He shared a meal with His disciples and told them to "do this in remembrance of Me."
Communion helps us:
❤️ Remember that Jesus loves us so much He gave His life for us.
🙏 Reflect on His sacrifice and say "thank you" for His forgiveness.
🔥 Refocus our hearts to keep following Jesus.
________________________________________________
When Should a Child Take Communion?
We encourage kids to participate in communion only after they have made the decision to follow Jesus—inviting Him into their heart and understanding what He did for them.
If your child has accepted Jesus and understands the meaning of communion, they are ready!
Before taking communion, help your child examine their heart (1 Corinthians 11:27-29). This is a great time to talk about forgiveness—making sure they aren’t holding onto anger or hurt, and are ready to honor Jesus with their whole heart.
________________________________________________
How Do We Take Communion?
At Grace City, we use:
You can do this at home as a family! You can make it special—maybe light a candle, play worship music, or gather around the table. The most important thing is that you take this moment seriously and focus on remembering Jesus.

Parent Guide | Leading Your Child Through Communion
A Step-By-Step Guide for you.
Step 1: PRAY Together
Here’s a prayer you can lead:
"Jesus, thank You for loving us so much. Thank You for giving Your life for us on the cross, so that we could be forgiven and free. Help us to always remember what You did for us. Today, we take this time to honor You, to say thank You, and to love You with all our hearts. We invite You into this moment with us. We love You, Jesus. Amen."
Step 2: READ Scripture Together
Take time to read Luke 22:14-20 as a family. You can even help your child open the Bible and find it for themselves!
This is where Jesus shares communion for the first time and says, “Do this in remembrance of me.”
Step 3: TAKE the Bread
Hold the bread or cracker and say:
"This bread reminds us of Jesus’ body. His body was hurt and broken when He died on the cross because He loves us. He went through all of that to forgive our sins. When we eat this bread, we remember what Jesus did for us."
➡ Now eat the bread together.
Step 4: TAKE the Juice
Hold the juice and say:
"This juice reminds us of Jesus’ blood. Jesus gave His life and His blood so that we could be free from sin and live with Him forever. When we drink this juice, we remember His great love and the life He gives us."
➡ Now drink the juice together.
Step 5: CLOSE in Prayer
Finish with a simple prayer of thanks:
"Jesus, thank You for loving us and for dying on the cross for us. Thank You for forgiving our sins and making a way for us to be close to You. Help us to always remember Your love and to follow You every day. We love You! Amen."
Final Encouragement
Taking communion as a family is a powerful way to teach your child what it means to love and follow Jesus. You don’t have to have all the right words—just be real, be honest, and focus on remembering what Jesus has done.
If you’re ever unsure, our Grace City Kids team is here to walk with you—we love partnering with parents to help raise a generation that knows and loves Jesus.
